Andy and I met a few years ago when we worked together at a law firm in the suburbs of Melbourne. We found out we lived near each other and Andy started driving us home. Through our conversations and listening to Andrew’s calls to his mother and wife Cherry, I learned about his life and the friendship that developed between us. The sky and light can be amazing at certain times of the year in Melbourne, especially western skies late in the day. I remember being struck by the visual contrast between the thousands of people walking together on the street, their mutual isolation, and the great divine beauty above. The film was based on our trips home at that time.

In art, I am drawn to repetition and the small changes that occur within elements that are repeated. I’m interested in how we create routine and structure in our lives – we work, drive in the same lane, park in the same place, take the same route, talk on the phone . Perhaps repetition allows a sense of control when in reality much is beyond our control. When I was thinking the film, I considered the work of the Lumière brothers, including Workers Leaving the Lumière Factory (1895). I was thinking about how close business is now to the culture of car travel in most Australian cities compared to the workers who hastily left the Lumière factory on foot. a hundred years ago. In the traditional road movie, the car is the vehicle of salvation on the open road. Instead, I wanted to focus on the car as an integral part of the monotonous daily rhythm of commuting.

I have struggled with the idea of mortality all my life. Even when I experience beautiful moments, I always realize that they will soon pass. In a way, I wonder if that’s why I’m drawn to film – its unique ability to capture the passing of time, or as Bazin says, “spiced up” change as protection against the passing of time. The ability to record time often seems to diminish for the film’s narrative progression. I wanted to give more importance to this aspect; Shoot seamlessly in real time and basically shoot with blocks of time while editing. I was interested in the mood and rhythm of time – some parts of the film seem to pass slowly, while others seem to pass quickly. Meanwhile, the digital clock visible on the dashboard emphasizes the smooth progress of time.
The film shows the middle age of Andrew and Cherry, when their parents died. This is an age first explored by Seamus Heaney, who used the metaphor of the roof being taken off the house after the death of his parents – the sudden communication of the Infinity above and his own death, now there is no one else . living above” or earlier. Taken from the Heaney collection Seeing Things, this excerpt from “Lightnings” seems to speak to the themes of the film in general, and to me it fits right in the image of Andy and Cherry alone on the plains of the same name in Western Victoria ::
And what after the prescribed visit? Nothing surprising, never mind. Watching alone from afar. And it’s nothing special at all, it’s just that the old truth comes to light: there is no chance for the next time. Knowledge – a refreshing breeze.
Unfortunately, I have very few photos of the small cast and crew that we took during the year we were filming. Pictured below are Andy, myself, cinematographer Simon J Walsh and sound recordist Steven Bond. Cherry, who was helping on the other end of Andy’s phone call, is missing from this photo. We weren’t allowed to film in the parking lot and we were worried about attracting attention, so we stayed in another nearby parking lot until 5:00 pm when we went to the location. While I was waiting, Andy and I would go for walks, usually to lunch nearby, and discuss the structure of the interview to be filmed that day. We have all become very close and I hope that the growth of our friendship over that time will be reflected in the film. Looking at this photo, it seems like it happened a long time ago!
