Like many Singaporean parents, YES 933 DJ Lynn Piefen and her husband, a computer engineer, decided to move house so that their son Luke would have a better chance of getting into the primary school of their choice.

The couple, in their 40s, lived in the western region. Last year, she spent “less than $1.4 million” on a condo in northeastern Singapore, less than a kilometer from her chosen school. Her complaint was that the walk-up was on the fourth floor of the apartment. “My husband said, ‘There is no lift. When you leave, you have to carry your luggage [up the stairs].
They sat on it for six months, buying an apartment last May “just in time” for school enrollment in July.
The lady said she was “definitely kiasu” for “going on the wing” to buy a condo for her son to go to school with. Although Piffen admits, she felt more “last minute” than most parents.

Sharing a living space is a children’s playground. While storing books and toys on open shelves can make the space look cluttered, Peffen insists that boys have a cubby hole for easy access to items.
“I try to design a play area [like a preschool] with open shelves where children can see their books and toys. In our old place, everything was kept in a cabinet, and while it looked nice, they rarely played with some of the toys because they couldn’t remember where they were or couldn’t get to them,” she explained.
The shelves allow Piffen and her husband to display their collections, their son’s art, and “things that are meaningful to [them].”
“[The calendar shows] our wedding day so we can’t forget and finally get to see the wedding photos stuck behind the TV,” laughs Pfeffen.

“One of the reasons we want to give them their own space is because ‘Snuggy is old and he used to pee all over our old place. We give him his own space for hygiene reasons and it’s easy to clean up if he pees,'” shared Piefen.
Her husband, designer Catio, completed the playground with wooden blocks, bridge timbers and drinking water. The earthy palette continues in the master bedroom, which is minimal. Fitted with a wardrobe, TV console and cushioned platform bed for children to climb in and out safely.
