North Las Vegas, Nev. (AP) – A driver who ran a red light, had a history of speeding and had drug and battery convictions before crashing his car into a minivan, killing him, his passenger and seven members of a North Las Vegas family, police say. Monday said.

Thomas Chapman, a member of the National Transportation Safety Board, told reporters that federal investigators will conduct a “parallel” investigation into “safety issues of national importance” conducted by North Las Vegas police.

“Our goal is not only to understand what happened, but to understand why it happened and recommend changes to prevent it from happening again,” Chapman said.

North Las Vegas Police Officer Alexander Cuevas confirmed the driver involved in the crash, Gary Dean Robinson, 59, of North Las Vegas, has a traffic and criminal history.

Nine days before the fatal crash in Las Vegas in December, Robinson pleaded guilty to speeding and was fined $150, the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported, citing court documents.

Killed By Suspected Impaired Driver In Henderson

Last August, Las Vegas police also received a speeding ticket; North Las Vegas police three times between November 2020 and February 2021; And once in 2017 by Henderson police, the Review-Journal found.

Robinson has been in state prison since pleading guilty in 2004 to possession of cocaine and violating his probation, and was convicted of battery on a magistrate in 2009, according to court records.

Robinson’s son is Gary Robinson Jr. The campaigner declined to comment in a telephone conversation with The Associated Press on Monday.

Robinson’s Dodge Challenger ran a red light at 100 mph (161 km/h) and crashed into a Toyota Sienna minivan carrying a family of seven, causing a chain reaction of three other vehicles, police said Saturday. Ford Fuse, where a 31-year-old woman was seriously injured.

Clark County Coroner Melanie Rose said it could take four weeks for investigators to determine from blood toxicology tests whether Robinson was under the influence of alcohol or drugs at the time of the afternoon crash.

The driver, Jose Zacaria-Caldera, 35; and passengers David Mejia-Barrera, 25; Gabriel Mejia-Barrera, 23; Brian Axel Zakaria, 15; Luvia Daylen Zakaria, 13; Adrian Zakaria, 10; and Fernando Joshua Mejia, 5. They lived in North Las Vegas, Rose said.

“It’s a family,” said North Las Vegas City Councilman Isaac Barron, whose students grew up with Brian Zakaria and called him a popular and funny classmate.

“It’s a very difficult time,” said Councilwoman Pamela Goins-Brown, who knows members of Zakaria’s family. “Keep everyone in your thoughts and prayers.”

Dead In Crash Near Nellis Air Force Base

Rose identified the passenger killed in Robinson’s wrecked car Monday as Ravel Miller, 46, of North Las Vegas.

Erlinda Zakaria, who started a GoFundMe online fundraising campaign, called the people killed in the van her family and said there are no words to describe the pain she and her husband are going through. As of Monday afternoon, nearly 4,000 donors had contributed more than $175,000.

Chapman said the safety board could focus on what he calls a “comprehensive strategy to address speed-related crashes.”

“Such tragedies force us to assess the potential to improve safety by using speed-limiting technology in all vehicles,” a safety board member told reporters, including high-performance sports cars. In the first three months of 2022, the number of victims of traffic accidents in the state of Nevada decreased compared to the previous year. This is good news.

Now for the bad news: Despite the positive trend in the state, Clark County’s performance continued to decline in the first quarter of the year.

Nevada traffic accidents killed 70 people in March, down 14 percent from the first three months of 2021, when 80 people died.

Serious Single Vehicle Crash In Vegas

Interestingly, there were 59 traffic accidents in Clark County. This is 23 percent higher than in the first quarter of 2021. These deaths occurred in 50 traffic accidents.

One of the most high-profile multi-fatal crashes occurred in late January, when nine people died in a single crash in North Las Vegas. The fatal accident took place while speeding the red light at a speed of 160 km per hour. The driver who hit Robinson’s car, his passenger Gary Robinson and seven others in the van were killed.

This year too, the number of car passenger deaths has increased significantly to 24, a 41 percent increase over the same period last year.

Pedestrian fatalities also increased in Clark County, with 21 fatalities on Southern Nevada roads, a 17 percent increase from March 2021, when there were 18 fatalities.
